Paul Douglass MIAPH - Commitment Phobia - Highgate, North London and North Cambridgeshire

Commitment phobia is the fear and avoidance of having to commit to anything, but especially relationships.

Symptoms of commitment phobia

Commitment phobia can express itself in all kinds of different ways, but typically sufferers may exhibit any of these:

  • Being very critical of the their partner in a relationship, and/or the relationship as a whole.

  • Hurting the other person, and thereby sabotaging the relationship, even if it's considered to be working wel, for example, consistently turning up late for things - whether with apologetic excuses, or not.

  • Being scared of getting noticed, because the other person might want to start a relationship. In fact, the commitment phobic person will often reject other people, so that a relationship barely gets off the ground. The motivation behind this is often that the sufferer can then protect themselves from the prospect of allowing other people to get too close to them.

  • A commitment phobic person, may flirt with other people, and often appear to want the attentions of others, even wanting a longer-term relationship. However the fear can eventually win out and the other person then gets pushed away, leaving broken hearts behind.

  • Fearing being swamped by others, and thus losing aspects of their own identity and independence.

  • Being unable to accept the thought, of living together, or getting married. Some commitment phobics will often have an unrealistic 'ideal' over possible suitors.

  • Often friends and relatives notice and will often make comments about the person simply being 'too choosy'. .

  • A commitment phobic person will sometimes fall in love with other people who just aren't interested in forming a relationship, because they have then (deliberately, or not), chosen someone who simply can't (or won't), form a lasting relationship, and so they are 'safe' from having to make that commitment.

  • The yo-yoing commitment phobia will enter a relationship with someone, find that they can't (or won't) commit to that relationship, and will then leave, only to return sometime later, before leaving yet again.

  • There can be the avoidance of having to commit to anything, not just relationships. This can include jobs, timekeeping, friendships... in fact anything that requires commitment.

In his work with successfully treating commitment phobia in the past, Paul Douglass has found that one of the main characteristics of the commitment phobic person is the constant need for reassurance... Visit the main Avon Hypnotherapy website to read more on commitment phobia here...
